What is Lanterns on the Lake?
LOLT is an opportunity to join as a local community and create an unforgettable spectacle of light and a celebration of gratitude. After an afternoon of free acoustic music and entertainment, when the sun sets and the time is just right, we light the lake with floating paper lanterns, available for sale on the day for $5 each.
What is the meaning of the event?
Historically lanterns were used to symbolize good fortune, request favorable weather, or celebrate the life of a loved one. At LOTL, you could be with us to show your gratitude, turn over a new leaf, simply enjoy some relaxing time with friends, remember a loved one, or just to capture some likes on Instagram!
Who can come along?
We warmly welcome well-behaved people of all ages. With the number of people, candles and the proximity to water, please keep a very close eye on children, especially as darkness falls. For the safety of pets and all participants, please leave your furry friends at home. Service animals are allowed. The lake is wheelchair friendly and our local Council has recently built a new fully-accessible bathroom block. To respect our neighbours, please don't bring your own music systems - free entertainment will be provided for all ages.
What time should I arrive at the event and what time do we launch the lanterns?
We start at 4pm and finish at 7pm. We'd suggest you arrive a little earlier to find your spot and enjoy your BYO picnic and the free entertainment. LOTL volunteers assist lantern launchers to light and set their lantern afloat on the lake at designated signposted areas.
How do I purchase a lanterns and how much do they cost?
Locally hand-made eco-friendly paper lanterns with soy candles will be available for sale from 4pm on the day at our headquarters adjacent to the amenities block for $5 each until sold out. They cannot be pre-purchased and we do not allow outside lanterns. This is because lanterns must be approved by Council for environmental safety.
What about food and drinks?
Feel free to BYO rug and picnic. Upper Blue and Central Blue Mountains Rotary Clubs will be in attendance with their famous fundraising sausage sizzle (veggie and gluten free options available), and takeaway food and drinks are also available from our local village. Safe drinking water is available near the ammenities block so bring a bottle for refills. The lake is officially an alcohol-free zone. Note we are a “Leave no Trace” event so absolutely all rubbish must be taken with you.
What about the danger of fire and the impact on wildlife and the environment?
All lanterns are safely retrieved from the lake by volunteers in canoes and disposed of appropriately. All lanterns are biodegradable and candles are eco-friendly. Approval and support has been granted by Blue Mountains City Council to allow this event to take place, and all necessary insurances are in place. We work closely with BMCC to ensure we minimise any disruption caused to neighbouring residents during the event. Safety officers, volunteer parking officers, First Aid volunteers, local police and the Rural Fire Brigade patrol the area.
How do I get there and can I park?
Wentworth Falls lake is located on Sinclair Cresent at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains. Limited parking is available around the lake side streets but please be respectful of residents and do not block driveways. Wentworth Falls Railway Station is located in the village, an easy 10 minute stroll away. We strongly encourage local residents to walk to the event. Please see a location map at the bottom of this page.
What happens if there’s bad weather?
We follow the weather forecast closely leading up to the event, and if we expect rain or sustained winds, we may need to postpone. Updates will be posted on this website and our social media platforms so you have the most up to date information.
Who runs and funds the event?
Our first 2017 event was self-funded, and our 2019 event will be financially supported by Blue Mountains City Council Arts Program auspicated by Varuna, The Writers' House. LOTL is run by local volunteers and is a non- for-profit event that believes in giving back to the community, so we donate a percentage of proceeds after costs to local charity.
How can I become involved?
We warmly welcome volunteers so please contact us via email firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to be involved. It’s a fun and rewarding experience!
